DIPLOMATE REQUIREMENTS as required by the ABCC

The American Board of Chiropractic Consultants is a non-profit organization which establishes certification parameters for the practice of chiropractic consulting; focusing on peer/utilization review, quality assurance and standard of care issues. The goal of the organization is to identify the tasks and define the knowledge required of the chiropractic consultant and to provide a valid mechanism for testing competency in this field.

History and Organizational Structure

The American Board of Chiropractic Consultants (ABCC) is comprised of five doctors of chiropractic who have achieved diplomate status from the ABCC. The board members are appointed by the executive committee of the American College of Chiropractic Consultants (ACCC). The ACCC is a non-profit organization, chartered in 1980, which provides educational forums and disseminates information to its membership and other interested parties regarding trends and the role of chiropractic consulting. The ABCC was also founded in 1980 and has been operating and administering a certifying examination continuously since that time.

The ABCC strives to meet those requirement set forth by The National Organization for Competency Assurance  (NOCA).

Certification Requirements

The ABCC has established certification requirements including specific postgraduate educational hours and an examination designed to assess general capabilities in this field. Following is an outline of the current requirements.

1. Postgraduate Education

Minimum of 300 post graduate educational hours

2. Experience

Minimum of five years clinical experience
An active chiropractic license

3. Examination

Successfully pass a written certifying examination administered by the ABCC. The examination is based upon a chiropractic consultant practice analysis, and tests knowledge in areas including:
Clinical record/case review (medical necessity, appropriateness and standard of care issues)
Expert opinion/testimony and report writing
Clinical care guidelines
Scientific literature search and review
Quality assurance
Clinical evaluation, assessment and care management

4. Recertification

a. Twenty four hours of postgraduate continuing education every two years, in the field of chiropractic consulting, is required to maintain certification.

Once all requirements have been met and the candidate successfully passes the certifying examination, the designation Diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Consultants (D.A.B.C.C.) may be used.
